Texas Gov. Rick Perry Leads Controversial Prayer Rally

Texas Gov. Rick Perry led 30,000 people in prayer at a controversial rally in Houston this weekend titled "The Response: A Call to Prayer for a Nation in Crisis." The seven-hour gathering was designed by Perry and sponsored in part by the American Family Association, which opposes same-sex marriage and has condemned Muslims. The event, which drew 30,000 participants, was also backed by the International House of Prayer, whose evangelical founder argues Oprah Winfrey is a Satanic religious leader. Though billed as an apolitical day of prayer for a nation in crisis, the response was filled with calls for an end to abortion and gave Perry the opportunity to appeal to Christian conservatives. Perry is widely expected to soon announce his candidacy for U.S. president. Critics denounced the gathering for blurring the lines between church and state.

And he has aligned himself with the likes of Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh -racist, Islamophobes, Homophobic , mean spirited and super wealthy .

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has tried to distance himself from the many extreme activists he is working with to put on The Response prayer rally, like the pastor who labeled Oprah Winfrey the harbinger of the Antichrist and the self-proclaimed ‘Apostle’ who called the Statue of Liberty a “demonic idol.” But Perry is open about his ties to advocates of Seven Mountains Dominionism, an ideology which demands that fundamentalist Christians take total control over all aspects of society. Dominionism advocate Jim Garlow is directing “National Church Mobilization” for The Response and other Dominionist endorsers of The Response include Cindy Jacobs and David Barton. Even the American Family Association, which is the official host of the prayer rally, now promotes Seven Mountains Dominionism.
Today, Perry appeared on Barton’s radio show WallBuildersLive and announced that he has received support from televangelist James Robison,who is leading the effort to rally the Religious Right around a Perry campaign for the presidency (though of course the rally is “apolitical”). Perry also mentioned that he is working with Loren Cunningham and his “prayer warriors” to mobilize support for The Response.

Governor Rick Perry is a booster of Hate Talk Radio & TV ie Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh , Sean Hannity and Fox News.

So before someone objects and argues people should not be judged by their associations but isn't that exactly what the Tea Party Republicans have been doing to President Obama and to liberals and progressives they have demonized from van Jones, Sotomayer, and the now defunct ACORN. Their argument has been that if you went to school or university and were friends with various people in your classes if they happen to be Commies, Pinkos , radicals then they conclude if you have not denounced these people loudly and publicly you must also be a radical of one sort or another.

But in the case of Rick Perry and other tea Party Republicans such as Michelle Bachmann they hang out and support right wing radicals including the Radical Religious Right and supposedly agree that America in their view has lost its way because it is controlled by a small leftist Secular Humanists anti-Christian elite . So they want America to cast this evil elite aside and make America into a Christian Nation a theocracy in which only Christians that is their type of real Christians who are anti-Abortion, anti-feminism anti-Gay anti-Immigrant anti-Muslim but are pro-rich pro-guns and consider those who are poor as stupid or as sinners who get what they deserve or just plain lazy .

By making such Media stars Honorary Texans he appears to support their hate speech against Muslims, feminists, Gays , liberals, Hispanics, Blacks , immigrants and of course their on going hatred of liberals, progressives and President Obama. Is Perry also willing to buy into their insane conspiracy theories for instance the Birthers that Obama is not an American citizen , or that he is a Manchurian Communist candidate about to turn America into a copy of the former Soviet Union or as Beck paints Obama as being the Anti-Christ, or the New Hitler, or Stalin and that he has set up FEMA internment camps to be filled with those who oppose him and so forth.
These Tea Party right wing Media stars spew their hate and conspiracy theories and lies without shame or a sense of responsibility or accountability.

We may find much of what these characters pass off as serious political and social analyses as being as lacking in logic or reason but as we saw in the past week they in fact were able to get President Obama to play by their rules and accept their agenda on economics in America and this was not the first time nor the last. Even the Conservative New York Times blasted Obama for caving in to these seemingly irrational ideologues .
And with all their crazy talk they are now becoming the mainstream and any who oppose them are UnAmerican and Anti-Capitalism and anti-Christian .

The power of the Tea Partiers, who refused to raise the US government's debt ceiling this past week despite the pleading of Republican pundits and the powerful, echoes the 1950s when Sen. Joe McCarthy, Fighting Joe, went after those who thought themselves his masters.

In the 1950s, McCarthy's core supporters in local Republican parties included old-line Republicans ...Today, in pockets across the country, the Tea Party Republicans are the newcomers who took over local parties...from already right-wing conservatives they sometimes deemed, wildly, as Communists, or at best RINOs (Republican in Name Only).
...Once analyzed in all its diversity, we can see the Tea Party rebellion as bringing together six major political and economic trends of the last 20 years that are distinct from the anticommunism powering the McCarthy age. The right-wing populism shown by Tea Partiers is only one response to diverse trends.
...Some of the rich are separating themselves from the rest of America. They no longer see themselves as part of a civic community and have been powering a (legal) tax strike for the last 30 years or more.

...A legitimation crisis. This is when the public loses faith in the government's ability to accomplish anything.

...The growing free-market ideology on the Christian right. Free-market Christianity pre-exists the Tea Party, of course. You see it in former Arkansas Gov. The Heritage Foundation and the Christian right have been building ideology together for the past 15 years and it is bearing fruit, particularly since Glenn Beck popularized it.

As mentioned Rick Perry is also connected to IHOP The International House of Prayer (Note: Not Pancakes) instead this is fast food for the soul I guess-its mission to train up an army for Jesus .

IHOP uses similar tactics to what are referred to pejoratively as Cults -spending hours days weeks in prayer with a group of peers -rocking back and forth like Lou Engle of The Call -they speak in tongues, weep, have visions and epiphanies and are told that all other religions and those phony liberal Christians are actively working for Satan-(sounds alot like radical Muslims or Jim Jones of the Peoples Temple- "Kool-Aid anyone ".

We've written about the International House of Prayer a few times before, noting that it is the center of what amounts to a 24/7 Call-type rally where prayer and music and worship are underway, literally, at all times.

We knew that IHOP was founded and is overseen by Mike Bickle, and that Lou Engle has close ties to both Bickle and the institution he started, but we didn't realize until reading this profile in Charisma was just how large the organization had become and that it was expanding at an astonishing pace:

As regimented as that structure may sound to those who thrive on spontaneous worship and prayer, it’s integral to what happens in the prayer room—which, in turn, is the heart of everything IHOP is and does. The move of the Holy Spirit drew thousands, many of whom reported physical and emotional healings. This fall the university began accepting overseas applications for the first time, and leaders say they have more than 5,000 international students waiting to enroll.
