FOUR DEAD IN OHIO : KENT STATE MAY 4, 1970

Tin soldiers and nixon coming,
We’re finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in ohio.

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and nixon coming,
We’re finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in ohio.

STUDENT SHOT BY NATIONAL GUARD DURING PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION : KENT STATE MAY 4, 1970 IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS Neil Young composed the song "Ohio" after looking at photos appearing in Life magazine and then taking a walk in the woods. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young went to the studio and recorded the song which was released to radio stations shortly after the killings. Soon, the lyrics "Four dead in Ohio" became an anthem to a generation. In some parts of the country, the song was banned from playlists because of it's "anti-war" and "anti-Nixon" sentiments.

NATIONAL GUARD SHOOTING AT STUDENT ANTI-WAR DEMONSTRATERS

AND AS MICHAEL CORCORAN IN " WHY KENT STATE IS IMPORTANT TODAY " SAYS: The students were unarmed, and the closest was more than 60 feet away from the Guard at the time of the shooting. There was no warning shot; the National Guard never issued an apology; and no one ever spent a day in jail for the killings despite the fact that the President's Commission on Campus Unrest, appointed by President Nixon in 1970, found the shootings to be ''unwarranted and inexcusable."

In a speech made in April of 1970, Agnew advised police to ". . . just imagine they (students) are wearing brown shirts or white sheets and act accordingly." VICE PRESIDENT SPIRO T. AGNEW
